15 Games Like Fallout 76 To Get You Ready For West Virginia (PC, PS4, Xbox One) – 2018

Last updated on November 27, 2019, By Dan Hodges

Bethesda’s upcoming Fallout 76 was undoubtedly one of the most interesting and exciting things to come out of E3. A new Fallout game built as an MMO-ish multiplayer experience, it marks a new turn for Todd Howard’s Bethesda Game Studio’s team. The Bethesda E3 event also teased an extremely early Elder Scrolls 6, but we’ll have to wait a while for that.

Below are 15 games like Fallout 76 you might want to play to get you hyped for Fallout 76.

  • Fallout 76 available on platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows
  • Developer: Bethesda Game Studios
  • Publisher: Bethesda
  • Release Date: 14 November 2018

Games Like Fallout 76 (2018) – Similar Recommended Games

1. Fallout 4

fallout 4

An obvious one to start with, but naturally, the most recent Fallout game is the most relevant game you could play, and certainly the best thing to get you prepared for Fallout 76. Fallout 76 will presumably be made in the same engine or at least a slightly upgraded version.

Fallout 4 is an awesome post-apocalypse RPG that blends the gripping role-playing elements of previous Fallout games with refined mechanics and tighter controls. The huge variety of mods that the community have made for it make it better than ever. If you’ve never played it then there’s no better time, and even if you have played it it’s always worth re-playing with a ton of mods.

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One

2. Elder Scrolls Online

Elder Scrolls Online

If you’re interested in Fallout 76’s MMO-ish structure and multiplayer focus, why not check out Bethesda’s other foray into MMO games? Elder Scrolls Online may not be a Fallout game, but it scratches a similar itch. Also, it’s a fully-fledged MMO like World of Warcraft or Guild Wars 2, it can be played as a co-op Elder Scrolls.

Only time will tell how similar Fallout 76 will be to Elder Scrolls Online, but there is sure to be some likeness in the design and structure.

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Mac

3. Fallout 3

If you really can’t wait for Fallout 76 and need some Bethesda wasteland right now, why not go back and re-visit (or visit for the first time) 2008’s Fallout 3? This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the Fallout reboot that helped put Bethesda on the map. It may feel somewhat dated when compared to Fallout 4, but it’s still an excellent game with a vast array of interesting characters, quests, locations, weapons, and more.

With the huge array of best mods available for fallout 3, it’s a massively different and improved game than the one you played 10 years ago. The DLC expansions released were also very good and you can easily find the GOTY edition of the game super cheap on Steam at this point.

Platforms: PC, Xbox 360, PS3

4. Fallout New Vegas

Fallout New Vegas

Alternatively, you could check out Obsidian’s Fallout New Vegas, a different take on the nuke-ravaged wasteland of future America. Some argue that New Vegas is a better game than Fallout 3, but that’s up to debate and is largely subjective. Personally, I prefer New Vegas’ world and writing, as well as it’s somewhat refined systems, but they are both close contenders.

If you’ve played 3 to death and just don’t feel like re-visiting it, why not check in with Fallout New Vegas? The huge array of mods available make the game into something truly special.

Platforms: PC, Xbox 360, PS3

5. Fallout

If you’re really looking for a new Fallout experience, and certainly a more unique one, maybe consider checking out where it all started: 1997’s Fallout. It’s an old and antiquated game that may seem impenetrable to some, but can get past the age of the game and some of it’s more awkward tendencies you’re in for a great role-playing experience.

An RPG classic, and one of the best PC RPGs from its era, Fallout is actually remarkably similar to modern Fallout games. You’ll find many of the same monsters, guns, and systems in this game, including the iconic S.P.E.C.I.AL. stat system. You may need guidance to get into this game, especially if you’re unfamiliar with PC RPGs, but it’s a great experience if you give it a chance.

6. S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Call of Pripyat

Stalker call of pripyat

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games are certainly Fallout-inspired, but they’re wonderfully unique. A blend of RPG-shooter with tense and atmospheric horror game and post-apocalyptic Russia sim. It may not have the co-op nature of Fallout 76, but it’s still an excellent RPG that definitely scratches a similar itch.

It’s deep, rich, vast and harrowing. A great RPG with solid shooting and a great sense of atmosphere.

And, of course, as with any cult PC game, it has a huge and dedicated modding community so you can tweak, alter and improve the game to your heart’s content.

Platforms: PC

7. Survarium

Survarium

Originally a now-canceled S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game, Survarium is a free-to-play game that’s still in the works. In its current form, it’s mostly a handful of PvP modes, but the developers have stated that they want to build it out into a fully-fledged MMO.

Time will tell what comes of it, but it certainly seems promising. I haven’t played it for a while, but when I did it seemed to have some potential, the shooting mechanics were solid and the PvP was pretty fun for a bit. It needed some work before it’s the game they’re looking to make, but it may be a bit more fleshed-out by now.

Platforms: PC

8. Metro 2033

metro 2033

Another take on post-apocalypse Russia, the Metro games blend tense close-quarters gunfights with a dark and creepy atmosphere and a rich, well-realized game world. It may be lacking in the RPG department, but it definitely scratches a similar itch.

A great shooter with great horror elements and a very unique world. The Redux version of the game is a remastered version available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and it’s a great way to experience the game for the first time. The game’s sequel Metro: Last Light is similarly great.

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, Mac, Linux

9. RAGE

Rage

Id software’s 2010 open-world apocalypse shooter is undeniably Fallout-inspired. A dark and somewhat quirky world with mutants, small settlements, and some unique weapons.

It’s pretty light on RPG elements and it’s certainly more of a shooter than an RPG, but RAGE is still a pretty neat game, and it’s worth checking out.

With Rage 2 being recently announced, now is a good chance to check out the world of RAGE.

Platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, iOS, Mac

10. Rust

RUST

Rust is a hugely popular survival game that serves as a great co-op game to play with friends. A vast and unique world, tons of crafting potential, tense combat and close PvP encounters. Fight or work together with your friends and strangers.

Rust provides some of the emergent experiences promised by Fallout 76.

Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux

11. The Division

the divison

The Division is Ubisoft’s 2016 open world co-op RPG-shooter. It takes place in an America ravaged by infection and struggling for survival. The game’s third-person shooting mechanics are tight and responsive, whilst the array of loot, gear, and character progression adds a nice layer of depth to the game.

The game can be played solo but is much more fun played co-op with some friends. It may be quite different from Fallout 76, but it certainly has it’s similarities, and if you’re looking for a game to play with your friends whilst you wait for Fallout 76 to launch then the Division is a solid choice.

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One

12. Borderlands 2

borderlands 2

Borderlands 2 is more shooter than RPG, but it certainly still has plenty of RPG hooks to keep fans of Fallout entertained. It’s a blast to play with friends and there’s a ton of content.

If you’ve never played it, now is a great chance to play it as you wait for Bethesda’s next adventure

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Mac, Xbox 360, PS3

13. Borderlands The Pre-Sequel

borderlands the pre sequel

Similarly, Borderlands The Pre-Sequel offers a great co-op shooter experience with plenty of RPG systems to keep you going. Borderlands 2 is certainly the more recommended game here, but if you haven’t played Pre-Sequel it’s well worth checking out.

Another great co-op game with some unique and fun gimmicks to freshen things up.

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One

14. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

oblivion

2006’s fantasy RPG epic Oblivion is still as much of a great game as it was back then. Vast, rich, rewarding, and exciting, Oblivion is one of RPG greats.

The huge variety of mods available make it a deeper and richer experience than ever.

If you’ve never played Oblivion, now is the best chance to hop in and explore the world of Tamreil.

Platforms: PC, Xbox 360, Mac, Linux

15. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

skyrim

If you’re really at a loss for what to play as you wait for Fallout 76, why not check back in with the RPG that took the world by storm? Bethesda’s 2011 Skyrim is still as fun and vast as ever, and you can really get lost in it without trying.

The huge, huge, huge array of mods available for the game, from the big overhauls to the small tweaks and improvements, make the game into something better than ever.

Platforms: Everything. It’s literally on everything.
