Insomniac’s upcoming Spider-Man is another extremely anticipated 2018 release. It’s set to be an excellent Spider-Man game, possibly one of the best of all time, although there have been several pretty good Spider-Man games over the years, like the PlayStation Spiderman games, Spiderman 2 for PS2, Ultimate Spiderman, and more.
Combining the web swinging similar to that of Spiderman 2 for PS2 (which was excellent), and combat that seems to be Batman Arkham-esque, it has the foundations to be an excellent game. The E3 2018 demo showed off some of the game’s villains, including iconic favorites such as Rhino, Vulture, and Electro, and some new original villains.

Until recently, we didn’t know a great deal about Insomniac’s Spider-Man. Since E3, and Sony’s showcase, we’ve learned a lot more about the upcoming web-slinging game. Here are a few things we know now:
Firstly, it’s not going to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, meaning it won’t be connected directly to any story told in any previous Spider-Man video game, either. It’s been reported, however, that this version of Spider-Man will tie into the comics with the upcoming “Spidergeddon” continuity, which follows-up from the popular 2014 Spider-Verse storyline. You won’t need to know about all that, though, so don’t worry, because Marvel has given Insomniac Games free license to do what they wish with Spidey, allowing them to have an original take on the classic hero.
We also know that this will be an older and more experienced Spider-Man. This time around he’ll be 23, and he’s been swinging around New York for eight years now.
There’s also the question of who we’ll playing. We’ll be Spider-Man, of course, but which one? Although it would be easy to assume Peter Parker, the most obvious choice, the E3 trailer from 2017 included a brief but certain tease towards Miles Morales. Now, whether that means he’ll actually be a playable character or cameo, we can’t be certain.
Insomniac also stated in an interview that Peter Parker’s long-time girlfriend Mary Jane Watson will also be playable. Who knows what form that will take, but there are certainly some exciting possibilities!
We also know that the combat will be more nuanced and fluid than any previous Spider-Man game. It certainly seems to be taking more than a few cues from the Batman Arkham games, that’s for sure, although now it seems every game with a melee combat system is using that same style.
A good Spider-Man game needs good web-swinging. That’s common sense, and Insomniac knows this all too well. The upcoming PS4 release is going to have, according to Insomniac, some of the best web-swinging across all Spidey video games. Quite the statement of intent, but it seems like they may be living up to. Impressions coming out E3 seemed to imply that they had nailed it, and that we’re in for a web-swinging treat.
